Why synthetic fiber won't take hair dye

Hair dye works on human hair because hair is a protein structure with a cuticle that opens under alkaline conditions, letting pigment molecules lodge inside the shaft. Synthetic fiber is a fine polymer filament with no cuticle and nothing for dye pigment to bond to.

In practice this means the dye either rinses straight out in the first wash, or sits on the surface of the fiber as a coating rather than a true color change. A surface coating doesn't hold — it transfers onto your hands while you style, onto your pillowcase overnight, and onto the collar of anything light-colored you wear. It also fades unevenly, so the "dyed" result rarely looks like the color on the box.


Why bleach is even worse

On human hair, bleach works by breaking down the natural pigment (melanin) inside the hair shaft — the hair itself survives the process, just lighter and often more porous. Synthetic fiber has no natural pigment to strip; the color is built into the polymer itself at the manufacturing stage.
